چکیده

Linac4 is a normal conducting H_ linac proposed at CERN to provide a higher proton flux to the CERN accelerator chain. It should replace the existing Linac2 as injector for the PS booster (PSB). The same machine can also operate in the future as the front end of the SPL, a 2.2GeV superconducting linac with 1.8 mA average current. At present Linac4 consists of a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), a chopper line, a Drift Tube Linac (DTL), and Cell Coupled DTL (CCDTL) all operating at 352.2MHz and finally a Side Coupled Linac (SCL) at 704.4 MHz. This paper discusses the overall beam dynamics concept, presents the optics for the different sections of the machine and compares end-to-end simulations realised with two tracking codes (PATH and IMPACT). The influence of phase/energy errors is discussed and the challenging features in the current design are highlighted. Linac4 is the near future 160 MeV H- linear accelerator of the CERN presently under construction. It will replace the present Linac2 as injector of the proton accelerator complex in CERN. The Linac4 is composed of a 45 keV ion source, a Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 352.2 MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), which accelerates the beam to 3 MeV, and a Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), ...

Linac4, a New Injector for the Cern Ps Booster

The first bottle-neck towards higher beam brightness in the LHC injector chain is due to space charge induced tune spread at injection into the CERN PS Booster (PSB). A new injector called Linac4 is proposed to remove this limitation. Using RF cavities at 352 and 704 MHz, it will replace the present 50 MeV proton Linac2, and deliver a 160 MeV, 40 mA H beam. The higher injection energy will redu...

Development of beam transverse profile and emittance monitors for the CERN LINAC 4

LINAC4 is part of the CERN Large Hadron Collider injector chain upgrade (LIU) and will accelerate H− ions from 45 keV to 160 MeV, it will be the first step of the upgrade with the replacement of LINAC2 in 2018. In order to measure beam profiles along the LINAC, several SEM grid and wire beam scanner (WS) monitors will be installed between the RF cavities from 50 MeV to 160 MeV. This thesis cove...

Upgrade Issues for the Cern Accelerator Complex

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is at a very advanced stage of hardware commissioning and the first beam collisions in the experiments are expected during the year 2008. In line with the recommendations issued in 2006 by the European Strategy Group for Particle Physics, work has now started for maximizing the physics reach of the LHC and for preparing for other foreseeable needs. Beyond...

EUROPEAN ORGANISATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH CERN – PS DIVISION CERN NUFACT Note 084 CERN/PS 2001-050 (RF) DESIGN OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING SECTION OF THE SPL LINAC AT CERN

In order to set up a powerful proton source for a future Neutrino Factory, increasing at the same time the flux of protons available for new and existing facilities, CERN is studying a 2.2 GeV superconducting Hlinac for 4 MW beam power, called SPL. The superconducting part of this linac covers the energy range from 120 MeV to 2.2 GeV. Three sections made of 352 MHz cavities with nominal ß of 0....
